Restoration Works

The monk brotherhood has made every effort since establishing itself in the Monastery (2011) to make it sustainable and create a space where pilgrims can find respite.

Numerous attempts to renovate the Monastery over the past 50 years have stumbled on lack of technical know-how and the difficulties faced by male brotherhoods (1950-1990), while difficulty of access has led to the alteration of the Monastery’s traditional form.

Between 1990 and 2011 no brotherhood called the monastery home, with the exception of a committee comprised of 3 priests who were responsible for performing the Holy Liturgy on Sundays in the summer.

From 2011 onwards, two sisters with the technical know-how and in collaboration with an Architect and crews specialised in monument restoration have carried out extensive restorations and the Monastery is now in the best condition it has been in years, though much remains to be done.

From early on, the brotherhood sought a way to furnish the monastery with heating for the winter months. An oil boiler was installed to provide central heating in 2011.

Of course, the isolated position of the Monastery made resupply, whether basic foodstuffs or materials for the restoration, a tricky affair. Thanks to the efforts of the previous Hegumen, father Anthimos Dritsas, a footpath to the Monastery was constructed. The brotherhood hired crews to widen this path and make it accessible for vehicles bringing materials, supplies and people who find it difficult to make the climb on foot. Ramps were also installed in the monastery to allow accessibility for individuals with reduced mobility. And so, the Monastery has been made accessible to anyone who wishes to visit.

While the basic structure of the building is stone-built, in recent years it had been coated with plaster that had begun to show its age. For this reason it was decided that the plaster should be removed and replaced with special, reinforced mortar. Besides enhancing the old stone-built structure’s natural beauty, the mortar also helps maintain the integrity of the stone construction.

The demolition of the Monastery’s belfry (erected in 1975 without the necessary support structure) on the suggestion of a special engineer report contributed to the structure’s integrity and safety for pilgrims. An architectural study for the erection of a new, traditional belfry has been prepared and is currently pending approval by the competent authorities.

Comprehensive restoration works were carried out on the roofs of the Monastery’s auxiliary spaces in 2020. All the old tiles were removed, bond beams made of reinforced concrete were put in place and a new tiled roof supported by wooden beams was installed, all in accordance with the mandatory energy specifications (insulation etc.)

The brotherhood was chiefly concerned with energy efficiency, which has to a large extent been achieved with the replacement of old, worn-out window and door frames with new, energy efficient ones that also fit with the Monastery’s traditional architecture. The brotherhood plans to:

  • Replace the roofs, furniture and flooring of the Churches and beautify them overall.
  • Erect a new belfry.
  • Pave the internal and external courtyards.
  • Configure the outdoor spaces
  • Create a new kitchen where foods for pilgrims may be prepared as well as a workshop for the preparation of sweets to be sold at the Monastery gift shop. The current space is stone-built, constructed in 1975 and does not meet the minimum building safety requirements.
