6th Promotion of the Historic Hiking Trail of Palaion Patron Germanos – 2026

On Saturday, 5 September 2026, the 6th annual event promoting the Historic Hiking Trail of Palaion Patron Germanos will take place, with the Holy Monastery of Makellaria in Kalavryta at the heart of the day’s activities.

This special event brings together history, nature and cultural heritage, highlighting the historic trail once followed by Palaion Patron Germanos during his journeys between Patras and Kalavryta, through an area closely connected with significant events of the Greek Revolution.

 Three Hiking Routes

The hikes will begin early in the morning:

  • Petroto – Latseika – Moira, a newly opened and marked trail
  • Demesticha – Selinountas River – Holy Monastery of Makellaria
  • Megalos Pontias – Selinountas River – Holy Monastery of Makellaria

Free bus transportation will be provided by the organisers for hikers and other participants.

Event at the Holy Monastery of Makellaria – 11:00 a.m.

Following the hiking routes, participants will gather at the Holy Monastery of Makellaria for a programme including:

  • A talk by professor and author Georgios Kourkoutas, entitled “Freedom Has Its Own Path”
  • A brief presentation of the marked hiking trails by Christos Falieros
  • Closing remarks by Konstantinos Konstantakopoulos
  • Byzantine hymns dedicated to the Virgin Mary and traditional songs commemorating the Greek Revolution of 1821, performed by students and friends of the “Kosmas o Melodos” School of Byzantine Music of the Holy Metropolis of Kalavryta and Aigialeia, under the direction of Protopsaltis Vasileios Kalogeropoulos
  • Traditional Greek dances by the Choreftiki Estia Patron
  • A nature exhibition by the Management Unit of Protected Areas of Northern Peloponnese / N.E.C.C.A. (O.FY.PE.K.A.), featuring flora, rocks and photographic material from the Chelmos–Vouraikos Geopark, Mount Panachaiko and neighbouring areas.

The event is coordinated by Enomeni Romiosyni of Patras (E.RO. Patras) and the Holy Monastery of Makellaria, Kalavryta, in cooperation with the Municipalities of Kalavryta and Erymanthos, the Management Unit of Protected Areas of Northern Peloponnese / O.FY.PE.K.A., and more than 20 local organisations.
